1856-D $5 MS61 PCGS. Variety 33-BB. An attractive example that has bold definition at the periphery but distinct weakness in the centers, like many examples of this issue. The luster is soft and frosty with a bit of a glint at the obverse rims. The color of the fields, yellow-orange with a blush of rose on the reverse, and the overall surface quality, with few blatant marks but a number of short, light abrasions scattered over each side, suggest that its origin was the South Carolina hoard discovered in the 1990s, though such an attribution is impossible to prove. Winter wrote in 2003 that this issue was "underrated," but recent auction activity and private transactions suggest that the 1856-D half eagle has come into its own at last.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
