1856 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge. Number 2316. A flat diamond-shaped tag with suspension hole at the top, 55mm x 58mm. Made locally by tinsmith W.B. Veronee. The elements of the front are as follows(top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; an incuse "2316"; "SERVANT" in a rectangular punch; "1856" bar punched. Excepting the city's name, the various punches are somewhat askew. Still, the impressions are strong with only minor wear. Evidence of prior folding as is typical of many badges which were discarded upon expiration. Reddish-brown patina with decent surfaces. A good collectible badge from Charleston's antebellum heyday.

Shipping: Small Collectibles (view shipping information)
