1856-C $5 AU55 ICG. Formerly offered as lot 8137 in our FUN Sale in January, where it was described as, "A date most difficult to find in such high grade, to a degree not always appreciated by collectors (surprisingly in such a well-studied series). The 1856-C has an extant population of about 100 coins, many of which suffer from a modest strike. Heavily abraded VF and XF examples are the most typically encountered representatives. Of the less than two dozen About Uncirculated survivors, this example is better defined than most, but it shares the trait of being lightly abraded, with a few more serious marks behind Liberty's head. The above-average strike will definitely attract the specialists for this, one of the nicest survivors of the 28,457 half eagles produced at the Charlotte Mint this year." Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
