1856-C $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 24-J. According to Doug Winter, all half eagles struck from 1855 through 1857 use the same reverse die that first appeared on a portion of the 1854 half eagles. It is interesting that a few examples of the 1855-C half eagle, from this reverse die, are known with a rim cud over AME, but this 1856-C half eagle and known 1857-C pieces have a perfect reverse. This would indicate that at least some 1855-C half eagles were struck after the 1856-C and 1857-C coins, or alternatively, that Winter's record of reverse die usage was not correct. Careful examination reveals that this reverse die, used in both 1856 and 1857, is a different die from Winter's reverse J. Mintmark positions are nearly identical, but they are not exactly the same. This light yellow-gold example has considerable luster and it is quite nicely detailed. A small abrasion inside star 12 is the only significant blemish.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
