1856-C $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Variety 17-J, the only known die variety. The typical seen 1856-C quarter eagle, according to Douglas Winter (1998), is in Very Fine to Extremely Fine condition. About Uncirculated examples are rare, and Mint State pieces are nearly unobtainable. Indeed, Winter estimates just three Uncirculated coins survive. In this regard, we note that NGC and PCGS have to date certified 14 Mint State examples, several of which may be resubmissions.
This MS62 coin displays pleasing yellow-gold color and soft luster. The obverse portrait has light micro-granularity, which Winter says he has seen on every example he has observed. The design elements exhibit some localized softness, which again is typical for the issue. A couple of minute greenish specks are noted on the reverse.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
