1856-C $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Winter 17-J. A scarce, poorly produced Charlotte issue from a mintage of 7,913 pieces. The '56-D has a median condition rarity ranking among C-mints and as particularly difficult to locate with an acceptable strike and decent eye appeal. This piece is light in color and very well defined for the issue, with several planchet depressions on the reverse that are apparently diagnostic to the issue, the most noticeable of which Winter describes as a "strip" from the back of the eagle's head to a space between the second S and O of STATES OF. Precious few Mint State pieces survive, placing this comparatively well produced example high on the Condition Census listing. Population: 1 in 61, 0 finer (10/02). From the Ashland City Collection.
