1856-C $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. Variety 17-J. The 1856-C quart
1856-C<$2 1/2> MS60 NGC. Variety 17-J. The 1856-C quarter eagle has developed a reputation as one of the most poorly struck coins ever issued by the Charlotte Mint. A number of common characteristics of the date have affected this particular coin, notably granular surfaces and a planchet flaw on the reverse which extends from the eagle's neck to the S O. That having been said, this is a pleasing coin with a strike that, although by no means full, is much nicer than normal for the date, showing significant weakness only on the left (facing) leg. The stars on the obverse are generally well-struck, with centrils visible in most. Luster, always open to question on this date, is subdued, but unquestionably present. A difficult coin to find in Mint State grades. Census: 5 in 60, 7 finer (8/06).
From The Della Collection
From The Della Collection.
