1856-C $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. While not sharp, the strike is quite good for the issue, with noticeable deficiency only on the eagle's right claw. The fields are prooflike, and project a warm orange glow when tilted under a light. Struck on a planchet that has minor depressions at the first star on the obverse, and between STATES OF on the reverse. The fields have wispy and minor abrasions. Branch mint gold expert Douglas Winter estimates that only 80 to 90 examples have survived, with the great majority of these in grades below AU. Only 7,913 pieces were minted.
