<B>1856-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC.</B></I> Variety 17-J. From the technical perspective, this is an exceptional piece that looks much the same today as when it first fell from the dies 150 years ago. The fields exhibit some flash, and friction is limited to highpoints such as the coronet tip and the hair above the ear. However, the major devices are bluntly struck at the centers, and the fields display some shallow mint-caused strike-throughs. Most if not all high grade survivors from the production of 7,913 pieces show similar characteristics. Douglas Winter (1998) sums up the issue well: "The 1856-C quarter eagle is an extremely hard coin to find with a pleasing appearance. ...
