1856-C $2 1/2 AU53 NGC
1856-C $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Variety 17-J. Typical weak strike for the date with the hair detail on the obverse near the bun weakened by a flawed die; the reverse is sharper and quite bold in the center. The surfaces show light marks with fewer visible than usual for the date and grade. There are scattered areas of roughness from improper preparation of the planchet as seen on nearly all 1856-C quarter eagles. A majority of the original mint luster can be seen on the obverse and reverse and both sides are toned in light yellow-gold hues with pale rose shadings. This is an uncommonly nice example of a date that is almost never seen with original color and surfaces, and is equally difficult to locate with reasonably good eye appeal. This coin is housed in an old NGC holder and it appears to be undergraded by today's standards.
The quarter eagles struck at Charlotte and Dahlonega in 1856 are noteworthy for being some of the most poorly prepared of all branch mint gold coins. The 1856-C is scarce in all grades with an estimated 100-125 pieces known from an original mintage of 7,913. Fewer than two dozen properly graded AUs are known and most are low end with poor eye appeal. Five or six Uncirculated coins are known with the finest being a single MS64 graded by NGC.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
