1856<50C> PR64 Cameo PCGS. The half dollar may well be the scarcest denomination from 1856 in proof format. Wiley and Bugert (1993) estimate that 20-25 distinct examples may exist today of this issue. That estimate still remains accurate today as both NGC and PCGS combined have certified 32 coins; however, once resubmissions are backed out of that total the actual number of extant coins would be in the 20-25 number range. As noted in our July 2003 Baltimore Sale, this piece shares the same die characteristics as the coin in that sale: "Fine die lines (as made) rise from the rim below the 1 in the date, and the first vertical shield stripe has attenuated lines near its peak." This piece is mostly brilliant with just the slightest accent of golden-rose coloration present around the margins. Lightly hairlined, the devices are noticeably contrasted against the depth of mirrored reflectivity in the fields. An important early proof and even scarcer as a cameo. Population: 1 in 64, 0 finer (8/05).
