1856 50C PR63 PCGS. This rare early proof Seated Half displays an obverse die chip (as produced) inside star 13 that is not mentioned as a diagnostic for the issue in the 1997 book Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins: 1722-1977. Either Breen had not seen this particular die marriage, or earlier die states lack the chip. Of course, it is also possible that he simply failed to record this feature. Breen does, however, opine that the proof 1856 Half Dollar is "possibly the rarest denomination of the year." Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert (The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dollars, 1993) state that fewer than 25 specimen strikings of this issue are extant. This Choice survivor is brilliant in finish with overlying streaks of golden-gray iridescence. With the exception of stars 11-13 on the obverse and the eagle's left (facing) talon on the reverse, all features are sharply detailed. A few obverse handling marks are noted, but none are sizeable or outwardly distracting. Clearly a rare and important bidding opportunity for the advanced Seated Half Dollar specialist. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
