1856 50C PR63 PCGS. Regular production of proof half d 1856
1856<50C> PR63 PCGS. Regular production of proof half dollars for collectors did not begin until 1858. Proofs prior to that date are rare. The proof mintage for the 1856 is unknown, but examples appear in a Heritage auction about once every two years. These can be identified by die damage to the upper portion of the first reverse shield stripe, and a die lump near the inner point of the final star. In addition, the base of the 6 is lightly repunched. Faint tan and powder-blue patination enriches this carefully preserved specimen. Well struck aside from the eagle's left (facing) ankle. Population: 5 in 63, 5 finer (5/06).
