1856 3CS MS65 NGC. The short-lived Type Two desig
1856<3CS> MS65 NGC. The short-lived Type Two design denoted a change in the composition of the coins from 75% silver / 25% copper (for the Type One) to 90% silver / 10% copper (for the Type Two). Two extra outlines were added to the obverse star, and an olive branch was added above the C on the reverse with a bundle of arrows below. One has to wonder how many people in the mid-1850s actually noticed these design changes; nevertheless, they provide 21st numismatists with a challenging type, especially in high grade. The obverse of this coin is especially well struck in the center, but the reverse shows the weakness one would expect from a Type Two. Bright mint luster underlies the light gray patina that is seen over each side. Population: 12 in 65, 4 finer (3/05).
