1856 $3 MS63 NGC. As an early P-mint issue, one might expect that the 1856 (26,010 coins struck) is a plentiful coin by the standards of the Three Dollar gold series. Nothing could be further from the truth. The 1856, in fact, is a challenging coin to locate even at the basal Mint State level with coins that grade MS63 or finer being particularly elusive. This is one of the flashier examples to appear in our Signature Sales. Rich orange-gold color deepens to green-gold shades at indirect angles, and there are even suggestions of golden-rose tinting at the obverse denticles. The striking definition is sharp in virtually all areas with the trivial softness over Liberty's forehead and lowermost hair curls being typical of the issue. Attractive survivors of this third-year Three Dollar delivery are more challenging to locate than those of the 1854 and 1855 issues. Population: 8 in 63, 6 finer (11/02).
