<B>1856 $3 MS62 NGC.</B></I> Among regular issue gold coins, this denomination is the rarest overall. The 1856 three is relatively plentiful in circulated grades, but it is hard to locate in Mint State. The average certified grade is just 54.3, according to Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, and this is inflated by the rule that higher grade coins are more likely to be submitted and resubmitted. This piece is a splendid representative of the date and denomination with frosty yellow-gold luster and excellent surfaces.
