1856 25C PR67 Cameo Quarter NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Briggs 10-H. NGC has certified just two Cameo proofs as Superb Gem pieces, and they are the two finest examples of the date known to us. The Kaufman specimen is one of these two pieces.
Perhaps as many as 100 proof quarters were minted in 1856, with this total combining the distribution of sets and a few individual examples of the denomination. Survivors are counted as about 25 to 30 coins, fewer than for the half dime or dime. Different factors clearly influenced survival. The obvious factor is the original mintage of these coins with higher mintages suggesting higher quantities that still exist. Another factor might be the denomination. While 25 or 50 cents was mere pocket change for the well heeled collector, many less secure collectors may have been forced to spend their proof coins as financial fortunes reversed. Larger denomination coins were likely spent before lower denomination pieces. As 19th century dealers purchased collections, they would offer the valuable items for sale, and take the others to the bank, much as dealers do today.
Upright 5 in the date as always for the 1856 quarters. The date is high and slightly closer to the base of Liberty, about centered horizontally with the shield point midway between the 1 and 8. Faint die lines are evident in the date area, extending up from the border, with others elsewhere in the obverse fields. The first four stars show faint recutting and the lower edge of the skirt line is minutely doubled. All known 1856 proof quarters have a peculiar and characteristic reverse die bulge extending entirely through the wing from AM of AMERICA, to the arrows and OL of DOL. Called the "signature die" for this proof issue by Dave Bowers. Heavy die polish lines are located below the eagle. The reverse carried over for use on proof 1857 quarters.
An amazing Cameo proof with full brilliance on both sides. All design features are extremely sharp with full definition, even on the minute details. Census: 1 in 67 Cameo, 1 finer (7/07).
From The Phil Kaufman Collection of Early Proof Sets, Part One. (#85552)

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
