Frosty orange-gold and reddish color is nicely layered over each side of this lustrous and carefully graded specimen. No doubt the lack of bagmarks will draw attention. Were the luster on the cheek a little fresher, no doubt this would add a point or two to the grade. Nevertheless, there is ample "eye-appeal" for everyone.

By no means a common date, yet there are sufficient numbers now certified to make 1856 an affordable choice as an example of the early Type 1 design without the motto IN GOD WE TRUST (1850-66). Nevertheless, Bowers suggests that possibly fewer than 20 are accounted for in Mint condition as of the time his Double Eagle guidebook was published. This is a far lower figure than the number of San Francisco mint hoard pieces of 1856-65. The 1856 uses a four digit logotype with the 18 close, 85 slightly farther apart, and 56 even farther apart. Ten pairs of dies were prepared but it is believed not all were used. Mintage: 329,878. (#8917)
