<B>1856 1C PR64 Red and Brown PCGS.</B></I> N-5, Low R.5. Proofs are only known from this die pairing for this year. Grellman makes an interesting observation about the condition of the dies used to strike 1856 proof cents: "The excessive lapping and 'weathered' look of Ms Liberty lead me to believe this may be a die that saw extended storage prior to its use, and it is quite possible this variety was struck sometime after 1856, perhaps several years after." Nevertheless, he concludes his assessment of 1856 proofs by stating, "Regardless of exactly when this variety was struck (my guess is soon after large cent production ceased in 1857), it is one of the most attractive proofs in the series. And, fortunately, it is the most common."<BR> This lovely proof is almost completely red. There are only the slightest dabs of pale lilac on each side that interfere with the full, original mint luster. Intricately struck and deeply mirrored in the fields. This magnificent near-Gem would make an excellent proof type coin for an advanced set. EAC PR63.
