1856<1C> PR64 PCGS. Snow-9. This variety is the usually encountered one for proofs from this popular year. It is most easily attributed by the short die gouge from the left ribbon on the reverse, and a horizontal die line in the eagle's wing on the obverse. This variety constitutes the vast majority of 1856 Flying Eagle cents and was apparently struck over a long period of time from 1857 until sometime in the early 1860s, with sales finally dwindling after the beginning of the Civil War. These pieces were well made and are generally the best suited for type purposes of the 10 known varieties of 1856 cents. The fields on this coin are deeply reflective, uncommonly so for a copper-nickel product, with rich red and lilac patina over each side. Close examination shows a few small planchet flakes and contact marks on both obverse and reverse, which accounts for the less-than-Gem grade. A very attractive example of this first year of issue for small cents.
