1856 1C PR64 PCGS. Snow-9. This (relatively) common variety is most attributed by the short die scratch in the lower left ribbon end and the die crack at 11:30 on the reverse. The surfaces display rich brown and red patina; the red, of course, being limited to the more protected areas around the devices. Sharply defined, as only a proof can be, each side shows a few light contact marks, the most obvious ones are located in the obverse field below AM in AMERICA. The fields are moderately reflective, as usually seen on 1856 cents. The mint was obviously struggling with quality control in the early years of producing nickel alloy coinage and had difficulty maintaining a reflective surface in the fields. This struggle continued, and in fact, was aggravated several years later when the Shield nickel series was introduced. All in all, a pleasing, upper grade example of this prototype Flying Eagle cent.
