1856<1C> PR64 PCGS. Snow-9. The usually seen variety that was only struck in proof format. This example is sharply struck with lightly reflective surfaces, although the fields are not deeply mirrored. Both sides have attractive light tan color with a few faint hairlines and insignificant spots. Originally issued as a pattern for the flying eagle design, and also to test the appearance of the copper-nickel composition, more examples were struck after the initial run. A substantial number of these restrikes were produced, probably within the first five years after the original 1856 issue.
The 1856 Flying Eagle cent is an important numismatic delicacy. It was a favorite of dealer Abe Kosoff, who ran auction sales from the early 1940s to the late 1960s. Kosoff always liked to start his sales with an 1856 Flyer, whenever one was available.
