1856<1C> PR64 PCGS. Snow-9. Most easily attributable by the faint die line above the I in UNITED, in addition to the tiny die gouge on the lower left (facing) reverse ribbon. Specialists of Flying Eagle cents quickly learn to check 1856 small cents for these two markers, since S-9 is the most available of the die varieties for the date. Snow-9 is believed to have been struck in the late 1850s or early 1860s to meet growing collector demand. The popularity of the 1856 Flying Eagle cent was immediate, and helped create the first collecting boom in U.S. history. This glossy and attractive piece features deep honey-gold centers, framed by plum-mauve patination throughout the borders. A few faint, retained laminations of mint origin are noted on both sides, but there are no perceptible hairlines or marks.
