1856 1C PR64 PCGS. Snow-9. A later striking with a faint vertical die crack from the tip of the eagle's beak to the rim. Although designated as a proof--the normal classification for a Snow-9--the field luster is satiny rather than reflective. The strike is precise, and the surfaces are nearly unabraded. Rich olive toning graces the fields, with the initial chestnut-gold color outlining the design elements. The historical significance of this issue cannot be underestimated. It introduced the small cent, which is still in production to this day, and it launched the first coin collecting fever in the United States. Every 19th century collector sought the elusive 1856 Flying Eagle cent, and a few numismatists managed to hoard several hundred pieces.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
