1856 1C PR64 NGC. Snow-9. The die line shows above the I in UNITED and in the left wing. The exact mintage of 1856 proofs is not known, but estimated to be about 1,500 pieces. Richard Snow discusses 1856 cent production in his treatise entitled A Guide Book of Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cents: "The original production was minted in both Proof and circulation strikes, with the vast majority being circulation strikes. U.S. Mint correspondence shows that at least 634 pieces were originally distributed to President Franklin Pierce, Treasury Secretary James Gutherie, and members of Congress....with two more placed in the Mint Cabinet. It is unknown if these were a special striking in Proof format."
The PR64 specimen offered here has received an impressive strike resulting in bold definition in the eagle's plumage and on the elements of the wreath. Beautiful gold-tan surfaces display a cameo-like effect when the coin is tilted beneath a light source. A few minor ticks in the lower left obverse field probably account for the grade. Excellent technical quality and aesthetic appeal.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
