1856 1C PR64 ANACS. Snow-9. The familiar tiny spur on
1856<1C> PR64 ANACS. Snow-9. The familiar tiny spur on the left ribbon end, combined with the hair-thin horizontal die line within the left border of the eagle's front wing, confirms the Snow-9 variety. This die pairing is associated with proof strikings of this legendary numismatic issue. Although proof 1856 Flying Eagle cents are more available than their business strike counterparts, they are also better made, and exhibit superior eye appeal. The present piece has nicely mirrored fields, and the strike is intricate throughout the wreath and eagle. The reverse dentils and rim are also squared off, a hallmark of a well struck proof. Toned rose, gold, and aqua, with a tiny spot each at 3 o'clock on the obverse and 2:30 on the reverse. A solitary thin mark beneath the C in CENT also identifies this specimen.
