1856 1C PR63 PCGS. Snow-9. The small center dot to the left of the N in CENT and the die gouge on the lower left ribbon confirms the Snow Reverse D, while the obverse die lines above I(TED) and in the eagle's forward wing confirm the Obverse 5. This is the most common die pairing for proof 1856 Flying Eagles. Snow comments that "these usually have dull or nonexistent mirrors. Many show striking defects such as lint strike-throughs and planchet flaws. The probable reason for the poor quality is the relatively large production. In the late 1850s it was unusual for proofs to be struck in quantities larger than one hundred pieces. The original mintage is not known, but it could be as high as 2,000 pieces. The estimated surviving population of this die pair is around 1,500."
This sharp piece offers tan-gold surfaces with small areas of smoky patina and somewhat subdued luster, moderately reflective fields, and an overall premium appearance for the assigned grade. Contact marks are minuscule.

Coin Engraver: James B.
