1856 1C PR63 PCGS. Snow-9. The present example shows high, squared rims and crisp striking detail throughout that confirm its status as a proof. Both business strikes and proofs are known from this die pair. Snow comments in The Flying Eagle & Indian Cent Attribution Guide that "the overall quality of these pieces is not anywhere near that of the regular proof issues of the period." Of course, this "period" was one in which the term "proof" was used much less strictly than today; high-grade business strikes were often called "proof." To further confuse the matter, some proofs are found in circulated condition. Although this die is not known to have been used after the original striking period, it is likely that some proof examples escaped into circulation around the Civil War.
This die pairing, the most common for 1856 Flying Eagles, shows a small center dot under the left-top serif of the N in CENT, and on the obverse there is a prominent die polish line running from the rim above the I in UNITED that reappears on the front portion of the eagle's wing. This piece shows light golden-tan centers with orange-red margins. Considerable luster remains on each side (more so than typically seen), and a few small flecks of darker toning appear only under a loupe and are quite undistracting.

Coin Engraver: James B.
