1856<1C> PR63 PCGS. Snow-3. While these dies are known to have produced business strikes, Snow-3 proofs are known, and many have been certified as proofs by the grading services. The present piece certainly has the look of a proof, since the denticles are squared off and do not blur into the field. The eagle's breast is fully brought up, as are the cotton leaves and tail feathers. The orange-rose fields are also moderately reflective. Careful examination locates nearly imperceptible hairlines beneath STATES and left of ONE CENT, and trivial carbon is present although barely worthy of mention. This is a beautiful piece that has significantly greater eye appeal than the dull or indifferently struck 1856 Flying Eagle cents that regularly appear on the market.
