1856 1C PR63 PCGS. Over the years, the 1856 Flying Eagle Cent has become one of the true legends of U.S. numismatics. This is curious, since it is technically a pattern, but then again the 1804 Dollar is a restrike. Approximately 1,000 pieces were struck of this issue and they were rather widely distributed at the time of striking in order to familiarize people (especially government employees and Congressmen) with the small format for the proposed new coin. So, these pieces can be found in all grade ranges down to AG, and they were long ago accepted into the ranks of regular issue coinage. However, truly well preserved examples are quite elusive today because so many were kept by non-numismatic people and contact marks are the norm. This spot-free example has lovely red, green, and brown color. The only surface flaw is light hairlining. Fully struck throughout and housed in a first-generation PCGS holder.
