1856<1C> PR62 PCGS. Snow-9. This (relatively) common variety is most attributed by the short die scratch in the lower left ribbon end and the die crack at 11:30 on the reverse. The surfaces display rich golden-tan and red patina; the red, of course, being limited to the more protected areas around the devices. Some deeper, streaky color is also noted on the reverse. Sharply defined, as only a proof can be, each side shows a few light contact marks and hairlines, the most obvious ones are located in the obverse fields. The fields are moderately reflective, as usually seen on 1856 Cents. The mint was obviously struggling with quality control in the early years of producing nickel alloy coinage and had difficulty maintaining a reflective surface in the fields. This struggle continued, and in fact, was aggravated several years later when the Shield Nickel series was introduced. All in all, a pleasing, upper grade example of this prototype Flying Eagle Cent.
