1856 1C PR62 NGC. Snow-9, as almost always for the proof 1856 Flying Eagle cents. A proof-only variety, and easily the most plentiful among all '56 Flyers. Distinguishing between Mint State and proof example has been the source of much discussion during recent years. Careful study and documentation of the various die varieties has done much to clarify the status of these coins. Rick Snow has detailed the 10 known die pairings, their characteristics, and striking periods in the Flying Eagle and Indian Cent Attribution Guide, Volume 1. Like many proofs, this piece has subdued surfaces and sharp design details. Dark tan surfaces show glints of orange color on the reverse.

Coin Engraver: James B.
