1856<1C> PR40--Cleaned--ANACS. XF40 Details. Snow-9. An affordable example of this always popular variety, the key to the Flying Eagle and Indian cent collection. A proof striking that saw circulation and was then cleaned, but showing clearly the diagnostics for Snow-9, the most prevalent variety of the 1856 Flying Eagle cent. Most easily attributed by the die line extending to the rim from the I in UNITED, with a nearby die line in the front of the eagle's left wing. The left edge of the 1 in the date is over the left half of a denticle. On the reverse, a die gouge shows through the left stem end. This example shows Extremely Fine details, with obverse rim nicks at 8 and 9 o'clock. Perusal under magnification reveals the expected nicks and abrasions, but no heavy scrapes or singularly mentionable contact marks. Despite the cleaning, the overall appearance is not harsh.
