1856 1C MS64 PCGS. Snow-3. Technically a pattern, yet struck in enough quantity to be considered a part of the regular issue Flying Eagle cent series, and immensely popular for that reason. This variety is believed to have been struck in 1856 for presentation to congressmen and other VIPs as an example of the new small, copper-nickel cent. The earliest specimens of this variety are noticeably prooflike in appearance, and this coin clearly follows suit, yet the details, while undeniably sharp, are not quite to the level of a true proof. The fields are a deep tan in color, with the devices showing notable gold highlights. Distracting marks are at a minimum and completely in line with the Choice grade.
From The Santa Fe Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
