1856<1C> MS64 PCGS. Snow-9. There are the usual diagnostics for this variety: a thin die line (as made) above the I in UNITED and a small die scratch (as produced) on the left ribbon end, also a small center dot is found below the upper left serif of the N in CENT. Normally one associates this variety with proofs. While PCGS has determined this piece to be a business strike, we believe this coin may actually be a singly struck proof, as the eagle's tailfeathers lack complete definition. This variety was apparently struck in substantial numbers and many were released into circulation after the initial interest in them faded. The fields are mirror-like and the coin appears to us to be a proof in all regards other than incompleteness on the tailfeathers. Beautiful rose and lilac toning is splashed over each side of this impressive near-Gem example. Population: 34 in 64, 16 finer (3/05).
