1856 1C MS62 PCGS Snow-5
1856 1C MS62 PCGS. Snow-5, R.6. A rare die pairing of this immensely popular and historic issue. Early small cent expert Rick Snow believes that Snow-5 is a proof-only variety, and the needle-sharp strike and moderately reflective fields of the present well-made example support his classification. PCGS has certified this coin as a business strike, probably because the obverse die differs from the usual proof variety, Snow-9. Snow-5 is about forty times scarcer than Snow-9, and approximately ten times scarcer than the business strike Snow-3 marriage.
The current lot has attractive straw-gold and salmon-pink toning. Both carbon and contact are unimportant relative to the conservatively assessed grade. Minor retained laminations at 7:30 and 9 o'clock on the reverse serve to identify this important piece.
From The Beau Clerc Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
