1856<1C> MS61 PCGS. Snow-5. The point at the base of the U in UNITED and the reverse centering dot at the N in CENT pinpoint the die marriage of this Flying Eagle cent. Writing in 2001, Rick Snow states that Snow-5 was produced as an original proof in 1856, although a few coins have received an MS designation from the major grading services. He estimates that no more than 35 examples of this die marriage are extant. This coin is mostly tan-gray in appearance with little, if any, reflectiveness showing in the fields. The strike is sharply detailed throughout, and there are no singularly mentionable marks, spots, or other imperfections. Perhaps the grade is limited by the coin's subdued appearance.
