1856<1C>--Cleaned--ANACS. MS60 Details. Snow-3. To this day, there are many unanswered questions surrounding the 1856 Flying Eagle cents. The exact mintage remains unknown, although it was clearly a small number. For many years, the figure of 1,000 coins was believed correct, although the 2007 edition of the Guide Book records 2,000 pieces. The status of these coins as proofs or business strikes, or both, has yet to be determined to everyone's satisfaction. Rick Snow recorded some varieties as proof only varieties, while others were listed in his reference as non-proof varieties, including this Snow-3 die marriage. Based on earlier research conducted by Walter Breen, Snow recorded nine different varieties, and categorized these as Pattern Issues (originals), First Restrikes, and Second Restrikes. The Snow-3 variety is considered by Snow to be one of the original issues struck in 1856 or, at the very latest, January 1857. Light tan surfaces with proof-like reflectivity still visible in the fields, and with traces of iridescent toning. This is a sharply struck example with full obverse and reverse design details. Faint hairlines and other slight blemishes are evident on each side.
