1856<1C> AU55 ANACS. Snow-3. The repunched 5 in the date and the level High Leaves reverse confirm the Snow-3 pairing. This bright and minutely granular example can be identified by a pair of thin, diagonal marks between the eagle and the date. The edges of the devices are blunt, typical for a Snow-3 business strike, and the date is lightly strike doubled east. Yellow-gold and salmon-pink tints emerge when the piece is rotated beneath a light. The 1856 Flying Eagle cent celebrates its sesquicentennial this year, and it remains one of the most famous rarities in American numismatics. Demand for examples continues to grow; partly due to greater awareness of the different die marriages, but primarily because key dates have been standout performers in the recent bull market for rare coins.
