1856 (1871) Great Britain, Department of Science and Art, Queen's Medal, AU50 Uncertified. A 55-mm, 22-kt gold medal weighing 109.8 gm, or about 3.53 oz of gold. Moderate contact marks. The obverse of the medallion features the Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria. This medal was awarded to and inscribed William Butler. Nottingham. Stage 23 C. 1871 on the edge of the medal. The medallion was engraved by W. Wyon R.A. for the Science and Art Department. This outstanding example of 19th century engraving is accented by the high relief of the young bust of Queen Victoria. Large gold medals of this nature are seldom seen in today's marketplace. Because of the high bullion values of approximately 27 years ago, many large gold medals ended up in refiners' melting pots. We estimate the market value at roughly $2,500 to $3,000, and we would not be surprised to see this medal sell for an even more impressive price. Includes the original case of issue, even though it is a bit tattered.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
