1856 10C PR64 PCGS. Small Date. Doubled Die Obverse. Greer-105, Breen-3295. All proof 1856 Seated Dimes are of the Small Date variety, and most, if not all, are believed to have been struck from the same die marriage. The obverse is easily identifiable by doubling on the lower skirt lines, and a die line that connects the upper curve of the R in AMERICA to the border is diagnostic for the reverse. The original mintage of this issue is unknown. Nevertheless, approximately 35 specimens are believed extant (per Bowers, as quoted by Breen, 1977), a figure which current NGC and PCGS population data seems to support. We note, however, that two proof 1856 Seated Dimes are impounded in museums (at the Smithsonian and ANS) and, therefore, are unavailable to the collecting public. The diagnostic features aside, this coin is unmistakable as a proof. Both dies were extensively polished before striking with the result that the fields are striated (as produced) and appreciably reflective. The rims are also wide and squared off. Curiously, the strike is not razor sharp in all areas, and some rollermarks (also as produced) are still evident over the obverse date, the bottom on Liberty's portrait, and the upper left side of the reverse wreath. We stress, however, that these features have little effect on the overall pleasing eye appeal. Both sides are toned in olive-gray shades that yield to pale powder-blue accents around the obverse periphery and the right reverse wreath at direct light angles. A lintmark in the obverse field after the date and a small planchet void in the field outside Liberty's right (facing) elbow should help trace the pedigree of this important proof Seated Dime.Ex: Pre-Long Beach Sale (Superior, 10/2000), lot 4347, where it realized $5,750.From the Ashland City Collection.
