The early gold issues of 1795-1834 were popular with collectors almost from the time of their discontinuance, though obviously only the better-heeled hobbyists could afford to save them. For post-reform issues 1834 and later, only the gold dollars, quarter eagles and three-dollar pieces enjoyed much attention from collectors until well into the 20th Century, and this interest still predominates in the gold coin market. The wealthier numismatists procured proofs of each year?s coinage, but the small mintages of these issues reveals the exclusive nature of such collecting. The collecting of eagles and double eagles by date and mint was all but unknown prior to their recall in 1933-34, when hobbyists suddenly awakened to the rarity of such pieces.
