<B>1856 $1 Seated Dollar PR65 NGC.</B></I> Ex: P. Kaufman. Pedigreed to the famous Floyd Starr collection, the Kaufman specimen is an aesthetically desirable Gem that will please the connoisseur. Few similar Gems have been certified, with most known proofs certified in lower grades.<BR> Proof Seated dollars are the most popular coins in the entire series of silver proofs, a situation that remains unchanged since the time of issue. While mintages for the proof dollars were higher than the subordinate denominations, demand was and still is proportionately higher. In his 1977 <I>Proof Encyclopedia</B></I>, Breen itemized 12 different examples and noted that he has "seen at least eight others and can well believe that these represent not much over half the survivors." The cataloger of this coin for Stack's called it extremely rare and noted that Breen listed just 12 pieces, failing to mention the remainder of Breen's comments. Later in his <I>Complete Encyclopedia</B></I>, Breen mentioned that "a few dozen survive."<BR> Few unusual die characteristics are visible to distinguish between proofs and business strikes. The claws are curved and nearly joined, and the two lower arrowheads are joined. Small unpolished areas are located at the bottom of most "white spaces" between vertical shield elements. Faint diagonal striations slant up to the left on the obverse and up to the right on the reverse, exactly oriented with each other, suggesting that these are remnants of the rolling operation before planchets were punched from the strip.<BR> A gorgeous Gem with excellent contrast between the mirrored fields and frosty devices. A few faint hairlines and contact marks are hidden beneath the appealing gold, lilac, and blue toning that is intermingled on both sides, including small nicks below CA of AMERICA, useful for pedigree tracking. Counted among the finest known examples with fully original toning and exceptional eye appeal.<BR><I>Ex: J.C. Morgenthau (10/1939), lot 175; Floyd T.
