1856 1/2 C PR64 Red and Brown NGC. B-1, R.7. A rare original proof Half Cent from 1856, this coin was struck from Reverse A, which is easily identifiable by a raised rust pit on the I in UNITED. According to Breen (1983), this reverse die must have been discarded early, as most business strike 1856 Half Cents are of the B-2 die marriage (Obverse 1 / Reverse B). Among the numismatic luminaries who owned an example of the proof 1856 B-1 Half Cent at one time or another are T. Harrison Garrett, Virgil Brand, Wayte Raymond, T. James Clarke, Willis I. duPont, and Colonel E.H.R. Green. We do not, however, know the pedigree of the present near-Gem. Considerable orange-red luster shines through mottled tan-gray overtones, and there is a swirl of golden color in the left obverse field. Both sides are sharply impressed without any singularly mentionable blemishes. A find for the Half Cent variety specialist.
