<B>1855-S $5 AU55 NGC.</B></I> This is the first collectible half eagle struck at the San Francisco Mint. During the previous year, just 268 half eagles were minted and only three of those are known today. In 1855, the mintage of half eagles included 61,000 pieces coined in San Francisco, and nearly all of those coins entered circulation. Few are known in grades better than XF. This specimen is an attractive piece with nearly full luster and pleasing yellow surfaces that are accented by hints of pink toning. The surfaces are lightly abraded, consistent with the grade.
