1855 S$1 PR62 PCGS. The business strike 1855 Seat
1855<S$1> PR62 PCGS. The business strike 1855 Seated dollar was produced to the extent of only 26,000 pieces, and, since most examples were exported and subsequently melted, coins of this date seldom appear on the market at any level of preservation. The proof 1855 Seated dollar is even rarer, and examples are offered less frequently then the already elusive proof 1854. Bowers (1993) asserts that 30-40 1855 silver dollars were included in the Mint's proof sets of this year. Several other examples were sold individually, perhaps bringing the total number of coins distributed to 75 pieces. If this number is accurate, than many of these coins have been subsequently lost, since PCGS and NGC combined have seen only 30 examples in grades that range from PR 61 through PR 65 (6/05).
An obviously important coin for Seated dollar specialists, the present example displays smoky bluish-gray and golden-gray patination that somewhat mutes the surface reflectivity. The design elements are sharply struck, showing just a little bluntness of definition at the top of the eagle's right wing. Mentionable contact marks are seemingly absent, though some wispy, inconsequential hairlines in the fields are largely concealed by the toning.
From The Dr. John L.
