1855. Pattern Haiti 10C. KM-PN69. NGC graded PF63 RB. Red, brown, purple, and blue, with iridescence to spare, a very choice example of this design depicting Faustin as the First Emperor of Haiti. Frosted relief against a nice mirror finish. A little hubris goes a long way with politicians, since Faustin's empire extended over a small island in the Caribbean Ocean just south of Cuba.

Faustin-Élie Soulouque (1782? - August 6, 1867) was a career officer and general in the Haitian army. He was made President of Haiti on March 1, 1847. In 1849 he had himself proclaimed Emperor of Haiti under the name of Faustin I. He was forced to abdicate by revolutionaries on January 15, 1859. Just another forgotten name (except by adoring numismatists) in an endless line of potentates.
