In the search for an acceptable substitute for the large copper cent, further experiments were conducted in 1855 following various proposals made in 1854; the 1855 coins use different alloys of copper and nickel. One alloy of 60% copper and 40% nickel produced pieces which have the color of steel. Another containing 80% copper and 20% nickel had the same characteristics as the standard alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel later used for the regular issue three and five cent pieces.
