<B>1855<P1C> Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-168 Original, Pollock-193, R.4, PR63 Red and Brown PCGS.</B></I> Thirteen stars surround an eagle that is flying slightly upwards, similar to the Christian Gobrecht/Titian Peale flying eagle design for the "Gobrecht" dollars (and soon the Flying Eagle cents), and yet the awkward, bunched position of the eagle's neck renders the design ineffective. The date 1855 is below with slanted 5s, and the reverse is similar to the large cent. The planchet is slightly smaller than the large cent, part of the effort to reduce the size of the "old coppers." Struck in bronze with a plain edge. The present specimen offers considerable mint red on each side, with a few darker flecks scattered about the surfaces.
