1855-O $20 MS60 NGC.
1855-O $20 MS60 NGC.<p>For most collectors, the 1855-O will be the rarest and most expensive New Orleans Double Eagle they ever purchase. It trails only the 1854-O and 1856-O in terms of overall and high grade rarity and is the third rarest of 43 Type One issues (this figure includes the 1853/2 but excludes the 1861 Paquet). An estimated 70-80 1855-O Double Eagles are known, with approximately a dozen grading About Uncirculated. Currently, only two have been certified as Uncirculated by either of the major services (10/01): the present example and an NGC MS61 in an Illinois collection. Obviously, this is a major opportunity for the Liberty Head Double Eagle specialist. Uncommonly well struck for a New Orleans gold coin, the only softness we see lies on a couple of the lower peripheral stars on the obverse. The hair curls are fully brought up and the eagle's plumage is completely articulated. The fields are bright and semi-prooflike, no doubt the bright finish did not have a chance to wear off the die since only 8,000 pieces were struck. A few planchet flaws are seen on each side (most are located on the obverse), but there are very few actual signs of handling or coin-to-coin contact.
